Is There A Link Between Dry Eye and Migraines?

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

link between dry eye and migrainesWhen it comes to migraines, many people are quick to point the finger at the usual suspects.  Stress.  Hormonal changes.  Drinks.  Bright lights and sun glare.  But while this line-up of common triggers might provide answers for some sufferers, new research is indicating that individuals who experience migraines might have another cause to blame:

Dry eye.

At Envision Eye & Laser Center of Glenn Dale, MD – also serving the greater Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. areas – Renee Bovelle, MD and her team of talented staff members are dedicated to providing patients with the information they need to make smart decisions about their ocular health.  With this new research indicating the link between dry eye and migraines, it’s important to understand what causes dry eye, and how it (and potentially, your migraines) can be treated.

Understanding Dry Eye and Migraines

In a study published in the medical journal Cornea, researchers observed a small group of participants to determine if there could be a causal link between dry eye and migraines.  Clinical indicators demonstrated that those patients who suffered from migraines have a greater severity of dry eye symptoms than patients who do not suffer from migraines.  Based on this study, researchers have concluded that irritating dry eye symptoms can lead to migraine flare-ups.

Dry eye symptoms – which can include red, irritated, and itchy eyes – are uncomfortable and often chronic, which creates the perfect storm for migraine headaches.  Ocular health experts have suspected that dry eye symptoms can cause migraine flare-ups, as many have reported that aggressively treating dry eye syndrome can greatly decrease the severity and frequency of these migraine headaches.

This means that ocular health experts are recommended to ask dry eye patients if they’re suffering from migraines.  This can help ocular patients understand the link between these two conditions, including ideal treatments.  It’s also crucial for patients who suffer from migraines to look into dry eye treatments.  Relieving these irritating symptoms can lead to a better quality of life for migraine sufferers.

New Study Reveals Vision-Related Illness Costs Are Skyrocketing

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

cost of eye care risingIt’s more important than ever to maintain your ocular health – but it might not be just your quality of life that benefits.  In fact, a new report from Prevent Blindness America has revealed that the costs of treating vision-related illnesses are skyrocketing…

And they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

Vision-related illnesses and diseases have been shown to cost patients, insurance companies, and the government almost $140 billion this year, more than double the costs in 2007, the year when similar research was conducted.  Health experts are worried about how the costs will burden individuals who should be more vigilant than ever about maintaining their ocular health.

So why the increase in costs for vision-related illnesses?

The Reason for the Rise

Blame it on the boomers.  According to President and CEO of Prevent Blindness America, Hugh R. Parry, the Baby Boomers are starting to hit retirement – and that means more cases of aged-related diseases like cataracts and macular generation.

“We feel that we now have a true estimate of the current and growing costs of eye disease in this country.  Armed with that information, we can address the need for increased prevention, research and healthcare options,” said Parry.  “It’s important that people understand that eye disease is among the most expensive conditions in our country, with over half the cost currently being assumed by aging patients and their families.”[1]

Parry hits upon another reason for the rising costs in treating vision problems.  As ocular diseases and conditions are so expensive to treat, this means that insurance premiums are higher, as are office costs and surgical procedures.  Take a look at the breakdown from the 2013 Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders Report:[2]

  • A breakdown of estimated costs of eye disorders and vision loss from the perspective of three payers: government ($47.4 billion), private insurance companies ($20.8 billion in direct medical costs and $1.3 billion for long-term care), and patients ($71.6 billion).

With these astonishing statistics in mind, it’s no wonder that more health experts are stressing the importance of excellent ocular health practices, like making regular appointments with your ophthalmologist.

Visit Dr. Renee Bovelle and her team at Envision Eye and Laser Center in Glenn Dale, Maryland – also serving the greater Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. areas – to learn more about preventing eye diseases and preserving your ocular health.

Health Risks Associated With Eyelash Extensions

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

risk of eyelash extensionsAt first glance, eyelash extensions may seem to be the ultimate statement in glamour and fashion.  With more celebrities sporting extra-long eyelashes, it’s no surprise to realize that eyelash extensions are growing in popularity.

However, when it comes to preserving your ocular health, it seems as though this trend should take a backseat: consumer reports have shown that eyelash extensions can cause allergic reactions and even infection.  In addition to these critical risks, women are discovering that eyelash extensions can cause their natural eyelashes to fall out, which causes a vicious and ironic cycle that’s hard to miss.

At Envision Eye and Laser Center in Bowie, Maryland – also serving the greater Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland areas – Renee Bovelle, MD and her team pride themselves on ensuring that patients are supplied with the most relevant information about maintaining excellent eye health.  That’s why it’s critical for patients to understand that no matter how great eyelash extensions may look, they may not be worth the risk.

The Main Culprit Behind Eyelash Extensions

So why are there so many health risks associated with eyelash extensions?  Simple: the glue used to adhere eyelash extensions –comprised of synthetic fibers – usually contains a formaldehyde ingredient that can increase your risk of irritation, infection and allergic reaction.

Eyelash extensions have also been shown to increase your risk of picking up conjunctivitis, or keratitis, a condition in which the ey’s cornea becomes inflamed, which can be very painful.  The risk is so great that in Japan – where eyelash extensions are especially popular – the number of patients seeking eye-clinic consultations has skyrocketed.

If you think you can escape these health risks with temporary eyelash extensions, think again: even false eyelashes carry their own drawbacks.  The simple act of removing false eyelashes can cause your hairs to fall out, leaving you with a thin look.  This can prompt many patients to seek out eyelash extensions again, thus continuing a vicious cycle that is ultimately damaging to your ocular health.

Preserve Your Eye Health at Envision Eye and Laser Center

Whether you’ve used eyelash extensions before or are simply looking to preserve the health and well-being of your eye, visit Envision Eye and Laser Center in Bowie, Maryland today (also serving the greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland areas).

Your Eyes and The Effects of Smoking

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

Smoking & Your VisionYou know by now that lighting up is extremely bad for your health.  But if you still give into the temptation to light up, consider this: smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs (and, well, everything else).  In fact, smoking can be seriously damaging to your ocular health, and may even increase your likelihood for developing macular degeneration and cataracts earlier in your life.

At Envision Eye and Laser Center – located in Glenn Dale, Maryland and also serving the greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas – Renee Bovelle, MD, has been helping patients achieve optimal eye health by providing regular examinations and encouraging healthy practices.  That’s why Dr. Bovelle is committed to letting her patients know about the effects of smoking on their ocular health.

If you want to protect your eyes and vision, then you need to read this revealing post on your eyes and the effects of smoking.

How Smoking Can Harm Your Eyes

In order to fully understand the harmful effects of smoking to your eyes, let’s explore the range of diseases and conditions you can experience:

  • Eye irritation is one of mildest effects of smoking, but the damage it can create can result in macular degeneration later in your life (we’ll explore this in just a moment).  Eye irritation can include chronic redness, dry eye syndrome, and the development of eye allergies.  Cigarette smoke is a dangerous irritant – and when the eye is constantly exposed to smoke, it can significantly exacerbate dryness and irritability of the eyes.
  • Macular degeneration is something many non-smokers face later in life, but smokers have four times the risk of developing macular degeneration.  The macula – which is a small part of the retina that is responsible for helping you see fine details – is surrounded by tiny blood vessels.  When exposed to the toxins contained in cigarettes, the blood vessels restrict, which makes it harder for the body to pass oxygen to the macula.  This results in the macula forming blind spots and can even lead to vision loss.

The carcinogens in smoke can damage the retina in the back of the eye, which can lead to blind spots, a common sign that a person is developing macular degeneration.  Unfortunately, macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness, yet one of the most preventable.

  • Smoking can cause the arteries within the eye to harden, which is a condition known as vascular disease.  Artery-hardening is a very dangerous condition, as it can lead to vision loss and even permanent blindness.
  • Like macular degeneration, non-smokers can also develop cataracts. However, smokers increase their chances of developing cataracts, the clouding of the lenses, because it reduces the supply of antioxidants to our eyes.
  • Smokers are twice as likely to experience dry eye syndrome that non-smokers, according to a recent study by the University of Wisconsin.

Achieve Good Health at Envision Eye and Laser Center

If you need one more reason to quit smoking, then the preservation of your vision should be a powerful one.  Visit Envision Eye and Laser Center in Glenn Dale, MD today to discover more good health practices that will keep your vision healthy and strong for decades to come.

cliradexTo maintain your ocular health, it’s important to eat a healthy diet and remove your contact lenses whenever possible.  But despite all of the steps you take to preserve your eye health, you still encounter irritation due to eye discharge, debris, and random ocular conditions that seem to appear out of nowhere.

Fortunately, you don’t have to run to the doctor every time you experience eye irritation as a result of debris.  Envision Eye and Laser Center in Bowie, Maryland (also serving the greater Washington DC and Prince George’s county areas) features Cliradex, a new product that’s designed to clean and refresh lashes and eyelids without chemicals or preservatives.

Renee Bovelle, M.D., wants the best for her patients – and that’s why she’s offering Cliradex at Envision Eye and Laser Center.  This unique product is made from a special variety of tea tree oil, which means that patients can use it everyday to improve overall eye and skin health without worrying about harsh chemicals and irritant preservatives.

Cliradex has resulted from years of scientific research, which focused on identifying which essential oils could promote eye health.  Cliradex was developed to effectively cleanse eyelids and surrounding skin, as well as help keep debris away from the eye areas.  This product is ideal for patients who commonly experience blepharitis, ocular rosacea, dry eye, conjunctivitis, and other ocular disorders.

So why did scientists chose to use an essential oil to make up Cliradex?  Simple: essential oils like tea tree oil has natural plant lipids that are quickly recognized and absorbed by our bodies.  For thousands of years, essential oils have been used to promote holistic health and treat various conditions like sunburn, nausea, and even stress.

To use Cliradex, Dr. Bovelle will encourage patients to wash and dry their hands before using the product.  You should remove the moist towelettes with your clean hands, and wipe over your closed eyelid in a side-to-side motion.  Be sure to avoid squinting, as this will prevent the eye from absorbing the oil.  You’ll notice a cool sensation, which means that it’s working.  Be sure to wait for Cliradex to dry.

To understand how Cliradex can aid in treating your ocular disorder, visit Dr. Bovelle at Envision Eye and Laser Center in Bowie, MD today. You can also give us a call at 301-805-4664.

The Symptoms and Treatment of Blepharatis

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

If you’ve been experiencing eye irritation for a significant amount of time, you could suffer from an ocular condition known as blepharatis. Blepharatis is an irritable and chronic eye condition that afflicts many individuals, including those who wear contact lenses.  While many people may experience a sudden disappearance of blepharatis on its own (this usually occurs over the span of two to four weeks), other individuals may discover that they need to seek out treatment.

At Envision Eye and Laser Center in Bowie, Maryland (also serving the greater Washington D.C. and Prince George’s county areas), Renee Bovelle, M.D. provides excellent care in treating patients with blepharatis.

So how do you know if you’re suffering from blepharatis – and what kind of treatments can you expect?

Symptoms of Blepharatis

As this ocular condition can be caused for a variety of reasons, it’s important for people to understand its symptoms.  These can include the following:

  • Redness of the eyelids and eyes
  • Crusting around and on the lid margins, with apex achieved in the morning upon waking
  • Flaking of eyelid skin
  • Gritty sensations within the eye
  • Reduced vision in the affected eye
  • Debris within the eye (this is typically visible under magnification)

Other less common symptoms of blepharatis include sensitivity to light, dark lids, and swelling.  This is usually indicative of advanced blepharatis, which will require a greater degree of treatment by an ophthalmologists.

Blepharatis Treatment

At Envision Eye and Laser Center, Dr. Bovelle has a wide variety of treatments that can be used to eliminate blepharatis symptoms.  Depending on the severity of the condition, these treatments can include the following:

  • Removal of the eyelid debris.  If it’s determined that the blepharatis is caused by debris, Dr. Bovelle can prescribe custom treatments to clear up the symptoms.
  • Application of antibiotics.  This will generally continue after the patient’s visit to Envision Eye and Laser Center to ensure that blepharatis is effectively treated.
  • Avoidance of eye makeup.  Blepharatis symptoms can be exacerbated by makeup, so patients should take Dr. Bovelle’s advice and discontinue wearing eye makeup until the symptoms dissipate.
  • Treatment of dysfunctional tear syndrome. This usually occurs with Blepharatis and can lead to red, irritated eyes.

An additional treatment for blepharitis is BlephEx™. With BlephEx™ Dr. Bovelle can safely clean and exfoliate your eyelids and lashes. Click here to learn more about this treatment.

At Envision Eye and Laser Center in Glenn Dale, MD, Renee Bovelle, M.D. and her friendly staff work hard to ensure that your eyes and vision stay healthy.  That’s why Dr. Bovelle is proud to announce that Envision Eye and Laser Center is currently offering a new eye supplement that’s been shown to fight vision loss associated with macular degeneration.

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration (also known as AMD) is an age-related eye disease that causes the breakdown of the cells within the macula lutea.  When these cells break down, patients often experience blurred vision.  If left untreated, macular degeneration can cause permanent vision loss and even blindness.  That’s why it’s so important for sufferers to have access to the kind of treatments that can halt or even reverse some of the damage caused by macular degeneration.

This eye disease may be associated with getting older, but that doesn’t mean patients have to suffer with it.  At Envision Eye and Laser Center, Dr. Bovelle and her technicians can help keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear.  What’s more, a new brand of vitamin supplements has been shown to prevent macular degeneration – and you can find this brand right here at Envision Eye and Laser Center in Glenn Dale, MD.

Envision Eye and Laser Center Now Offering Focus MaculaPro

Focus MaculaPro is a new eye vitamin that’s specifically formulated to help patients fight and prevent macular degeneration.  Created by over 400 retina specialists who treat macular generation, Focus MaculaPro contains specific eye vitamins that have been proven to slow the rate of severe vision loss associated with macular degeneration in an age-related eye disease study by the National Eye Institute (NEI).

This study demonstrated that by taking a specific combination of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, copper and zinc, vision loss associated with macular degeneration could be slowed by as much as 35%.  The study also demonstrated that this specific combination of vitamins and minerals could not be achieved solely through diet, which inspired these retina specialists to create Focus MaculaPro.

Blepharoplasty: Never Look Back at Tired Eyes Again

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul – and when it comes to your eyes, all they seem to be communicating is that your soul is tired.

Heavy upper eyelids can significantly age the face, making you look much younger than you actually feel.  This is why eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in America.  Blepharoplasty, the medical term for an eyelid lift, can give a rejuvenated appearance to the face by removing fatty deposits from the eyelid, thus reducing the puffy appearance that is so common with sagging eyelids.

Drooping and heavyset upper eyelids can be more than just a cosmetic annoyance.  Sure, they make you look tired and older than you actually are.  But sagging eyelids can also present a danger to your eyesight.  Heavy eyelid skin can sag over the visual axis, which blocks your overhead visual field.  This condition is referred to as dermatochalasis, and it can be difficult to live with, as it impairs a great deal of your vision.

Enjoy A Superior Blepharoplasty Experience at Envision Eye and Laser Center

Here at Envision Eye and Laser Center in Glenn Dale, MD, Renee Bovelle, MD and her staff are dedicated to providing you with a superior blepharoplasty experience.  Before you begin the procedure, Dr. Bovelle will schedule an initial consultation to determine if you’re a candidate for this procedure.

A few factors that indicate you’re a viable candidate include the following:

  • You’re a healthy individual who does not smoke
  • You don’t have any serious eye conditions, as this can make the blepharoplasty procedure difficult to perform.  These eye conditions can include but are not limited to glaucoma, detached retinas, dry eyes, and other maladies.
  • You don’t suffer from any cardiovascular diseases.
  • You don’t suffer from high blood pressure and circulatory disorders.

Once Dr. Bovelle has determined that you’re a viable candidate for blepharoplasty, you’ll undergo the procedure.  This generally takes about an hour to perform and can be done in the outpatient area.  Cold compresses will need to be used during the first few days of treatment, while antibiotic ointments should be applied throughout the recovery period.  This usually lasts for about one month.

If you’re ready to get rid of your drooping and sagging eyelids, schedule a consultation with Dr. Bovelle at Envision Eye and Laser Center today! Located in Prince George’s county Maryland, we’re just  a short dive from Bowie, Silver Spring and Washington DC. Just fill out the form in the top left corner to save on your blepharoplasty procedure, or call 305-805-4664.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

By Renee Bovelle · Comments (0)
Monday, August 6th, 2012
Tweet

Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, occurs when blood vessels in the retina change. Sometimes these vessels swell and leak fluid or even close off completely. In other cases, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.

The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. Light rays are focused onto the retina, where they are transmitted to the brain and interpreted as the images you see. The macula is a very small area at the center of the retina. It is the macula that is responsible for your pinpoint vision, allowing you to read, sew or recognize a face. The surrounding part of the retina, called the peripheral retina, is responsible for your side—or peripheral—vision.

Diabetic retinopathy usually affects both eyes. People who have diabetic retinopathy often don’t notice changes in their vision in the disease’s early stages. But as it progresses, diabetic retinopathy usually causes vision loss that in many cases cannot be reversed.

If you have diabetes, or are at risk for diabetes because of hereditary or lifestyle, you should schedule a diabetes eye exam with Dr. Bovelle today. Our practice is located in Glenn Dale, MD, just a short drive from Washington DC, and close to Bowie, MD and Silver Spring, MD. Give us a call at 301-805-4664 or simply fill out the form in the top right corner.

So what is Botox – and what can you expect from your experience at Envision Eye & Laser Center in Glenn Dale, MD?

About Botox

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated and constant movement of the muscles on the forehead and around the eyes. These deep lines can be caused by squinting because of need for glasses or sunglasses.  They can also be causes because of “heavy or droopy eyelids” so then you have to use the forehead muscles to raise your eyelids.

Botox is a protein that can relax those muscles.  By relaxing the muscles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and the “crow’s feet”, the deep lines and wrinkles are smoothed and softened.  Untreated areas remain unaffected by these Botox injections.

Botox has been used medically by ophthalmologists since 1989 to treat strabismus (crossed eyes) and blepharospasm   (uncontrollable blinking).  In 2002 the FDA approved it for cosmetic use.  You can visit Envision Eye & Laser Center and receive your rejuvenating Botox treatments all in the space of your lunch hour.  What’s more, you may see visible results in as little as ten days, which can last for up to three months.  You’ll   then need to receive another round of Botox treatments in order to keep up your youthful appearance.
