New Study Reveals Vision-Related Illness Costs Are Skyrocketing

And they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

Vision-related illnesses and diseases have been shown to cost patients, insurance companies, and the government almost $140 billion this year, more than double the costs in 2007, the year when similar research was conducted.  Health experts are worried about how the costs will burden individuals who should be more vigilant than ever about maintaining their ocular health.

So why the increase in costs for vision-related illnesses?

The Reason for the Rise

Blame it on the boomers.  According to President and CEO of Prevent Blindness America, Hugh R. Parry, the Baby Boomers are starting to hit retirement – and that means more cases of aged-related diseases like cataracts and macular generation.

“We feel that we now have a true estimate of the current and growing costs of eye disease in this country.  Armed with that information, we can address the need for increased prevention, research and healthcare options,” said Parry.  “It’s important that people understand that eye disease is among the most expensive conditions in our country, with over half the cost currently being assumed by aging patients and their families.”[1]

Parry hits upon another reason for the rising costs in treating vision problems.  As ocular diseases and conditions are so expensive to treat, this means that insurance premiums are higher, as are office costs and surgical procedures.  Take a look at the breakdown from the 2013 Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders Report:[2]

  • Macular degeneration is something many non-smokers face later in life, but smokers have four times the risk of developing macular degeneration.  The macula – which is a small part of the retina that is responsible for helping you see fine details – is surrounded by tiny blood vessels.  When exposed to the toxins contained in cigarettes, the blood vessels restrict, which makes it harder for the body to pass oxygen to the macula.  This results in the macula forming blind spots and can even lead to vision loss.

The carcinogens in smoke can damage the retina in the back of the eye, which can lead to blind spots, a common sign that a person is developing macular degeneration.  Unfortunately, macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness, yet one of the most preventable.

  • Smoking can cause the arteries within the eye to harden, which is a condition known as vascular disease.  Artery-hardening is a very dangerous condition, as it can lead to vision loss and even permanent blindness.
  • Like macular degeneration, non-smokers can also develop cataracts. However, smokers increase their chances of developing cataracts, the clouding of the lenses, because it reduces the supply of antioxidants to our eyes.
  • Smokers are twice as likely to experience dry eye syndrome that non-smokers, according to a recent study by the University of Wisconsin.

The Symptoms and Treatment of Blepharatis

If you’ve been experiencing eye irritation for a significant amount of time, you could suffer from an ocular condition known as blepharatis. Blepharatis is an irritable and chronic eye condition that afflicts many individuals, including those who wear contact lenses.  While many people may experience a sudden disappearance of blepharatis on its own (this usually occurs over the span of two to four weeks), other individuals may discover that they need to seek out treatment.

Symptoms of Blepharatis

As this ocular condition can be caused for a variety of reasons, it’s important for people to understand its symptoms.  These can include the following:

  • Redness of the eyelids and eyes
  • Crusting around and on the lid margins, with apex achieved in the morning upon waking
  • Flaking of eyelid skin
  • Gritty sensations within the eye
  • Reduced vision in the affected eye
  • Debris within the eye (this is typically visible under magnification)

  • Application of antibiotics.  This will generally continue after the patient’s visit to Envision Eye and Laser Center to ensure that blepharatis is effectively treated.
  • Avoidance of eye makeup.  Blepharatis symptoms can be exacerbated by makeup, so patients should take Dr. Bovelle’s advice and discontinue wearing eye makeup until the symptoms dissipate.
  • Treatment of dysfunctional tear syndrome. This usually occurs with Blepharatis and can lead to red, irritated eyes.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, occurs when blood vessels in the retina change. Sometimes these vessels swell and leak fluid or even close off completely. In other cases, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.

The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. Light rays are focused onto the retina, where they are transmitted to the brain and interpreted as the images you see. The macula is a very small area at the center of the retina. It is the macula that is responsible for your pinpoint vision, allowing you to read, sew or recognize a face. The surrounding part of the retina, called the peripheral retina, is responsible for your side—or peripheral—vision.

Diabetic retinopathy usually affects both eyes. People who have diabetic retinopathy often don’t notice changes in their vision in the disease’s early stages. But as it progresses, diabetic retinopathy usually causes vision loss that in many cases cannot be reversed.
